Lay Employees
If you are ready to employ a lay worker please contact your District HR Officer for conversation around Methodist Church process and good employment practice.
Once you have Church Council or Circuit Meeting approval - and before you take further steps - you need to complete the Authorisation to Recruit form and return to the District HR Officer.
In accordance with Methodist Church standing orders no job can be advertised and no appointment made unless approval is given by the Lay Employment Sub Committee (CPD 438A (5)).
Approvals are granted through conversation with the District HR Officer.
Alongside the legal requirements placed on UK employers each District has its own recommended terms of employment which, where possible, it encourages relevant employing bodies to adopt:
-
Yorkshire North & East District (Under review)
In your conversations with the District HR Officer you will have opportunity to discuss and consider these.
Note that regardless of the job or working hours every employee and worker (i.e., anyone who is paid to do work and who is not working under a contract for services) is protected by employment legislation.
Contractors/Self Employment
From time to time the District recognises that it is commercially appropriate for you to use the services of a self-employed contractor (i.e., a gardener, a window cleaner or a cleaning company).
If you are considering making an appointment on self-employed terms we encourage you to have conversation with the District HR Officer to ensure that the correct status is established and that all necessary due diligence is completed.
